Originally from Los Angeles, Alec Dye is a visual artist whose work explores spontaneous, expressive illustration. He holds a BA in Fine Arts from California State University, Northridge, where he developed a foundational interest in the rhythmic energy of urban environments. For the past three years, Dye has been based in Juneau, Alaska where he works to strengthen the local arts community.
Dye’s practice is rooted in the Urban Sketching movement, prioritizing the spontaneity of working on location over the isolation of a traditional studio. This method demands a swift, decisive hand, utilizing the unforgiving mediums of ink and watercolor to capture the distinct personality of his subjects in real-time. By bridging his background in observational sketching with a contemporary interest in isometric rendering, Dye creates works that serve as expressive records of both real and imagined spaces, documenting the sophisticated relationship between built environments and human connection.
